Lou Maestas uses a revered art form called the "Oil rub-out technique" which Michaelangelo employed in the 16th century. The whole process is subtractive, and teaches light and dark values by placing the dark first, rubbing out, then working towards the light. There is virtually no brush work; the piece is accomplished solely with the use of the fingers and a simple rag. Use of the technique allows the artist to maintain a fluid approach to the work.
